Vendor declarations strengthen farm biosecurity
15 Jul 2008

New research by Animal Health Australia (AHA) has shown that livestock producers are highly aware of National Vendor Declarations (NVDs) and are using them effectively.

About farmbiosecurity.com.au

Farmbiosecurity.com.au is part of the Farm Biosecurity campaign, an initiative of Animal Health Australia (AHA) managed on behalf of AHA members.

Farm Biosecurity is a national education and engagement campaign which aims to help livestock producers reduce the risk of disease. It provides information about farm biosecurity and preventing emergency animal disease, encouraging producers to identify risks to their livestock and minimise those risks through good practices. This includes checking animals regularly, and contacting their vet or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline - 1800 675 888 - if they see unusual signs of disease.

Farm Biosecurity has the strong commitment of Animal Health Australia members, who are instrumental in the program's implementation and who all contribute to the initiative.

Farmbiosecurity.com.au is the hub of Farm Biosecurity communications - a comprehensive reference for farm biosecurity information. The site includes information to help producers understand disease risks, what they can do to reduce those risks and how to go about it. It provides materials to help livestock producers implement good biosecurity on their property, including:

  • biosecurity checklists
  • self-audits
  • disease information
  • links to useful websites and member information
  • biosecurity related news and events.

This site also provides a collective area where all Farm Biosecurity materials are available for download.

About Animal Health Australia

For many years, Australia's reputation for clean, healthy and disease-free agricultural production systems, boosted by the natural advantage of our geographic isolation, meant Australian producers had an edge in a very competitive international environment.

During the early 1990s it became apparent that consumers and national and international trading partners required increased accountability for animal health and welfare.

As a result, Animal Health Australia (AHA), a not-for-profit public company, was established by the Australian, state and territory governments and major national livestock industry organisations. The company's mission is to ensure that the national animal health system delivers a competitive advantage and preferred market access for Australia's livestock industries.

About Animal Health Australia Members

Animal Health Australia members include Australian government, state and territory governments, livestock industry organisations and service delivery organisations.

Through the dynamic partnership arrangement, members are highly involved in managing all activities. The partnership initiates and manages collaborative programs to improve animal and human health, food safety and quality, market access, animal welfare, livestock productivity and national biosecurity. This strengthens Australia's animal health status and reinforces confidence in the safety and quality of our livestock products in domestic and overseas markets.
