The alpaca and llama industry have identified that the introduction of a national identification and traceability scheme is integral to the future development of the industry while it is still relatively small and growing.
In 2008 the NLIS (Alpaca and Llama) National Consultative Committee (NCC), with representation from the Australian Alpaca Association, Australian Alpaca Breeders Association, Llama Association of Australasia, DAFF, state and territory jurisdictions, Animal Health Australia and Meat and Livestock Australia was established to progress the development of a national scheme and oversee the management of the project.
The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) provided funding (in addition to an initial investment by the Australian Alpaca Association) to support the establishment of NLIS Alpacas and Llamas. The Australian Alpaca Association manages the DAFF funds for the development of NLIS Alpacas and Llamas.
Funding has also been provided by DAFF to other livestock industries to develop national identification and traceability systems. In return for providing this funding, the alpaca and llama industries have agreed to have a NLIS in place by June 2010.
The NCC recognises that NLIS Alpacas and Llamas must be cost effective to industry and must be developed in consultation with industry. This is fundamental to the scheme’s success.
NLIS Alpacas and Llamas primarily address alpacas and llamas in Australia. However, it addresses all camelids of South American origin, therefore can include guanaco and vicuna.
