NLIS (Pork) refers to the Australian pork industry’s Pork Supply Chain Integrity System, with traceability a key feature of the system.
The pork industry system integrates industry supply chain member and government programs and systems and comprises four components:
1. PigPass National Vendor Declaration (NVD) – pig producer declaration of husbandry practices and food safety risk management. The PigPass NVD carries the property identification code and the pig tattoo number to facilitate traceability.
2. On-farm Quality Assurance – to validate the PigPass NVD and verify compliance with legislative requirements.
3. Linkage of the PigPass NVD with abattoir systems – to provide correlation between the pig and the carcase. This involves the abattoir management uploading the required information to the NLIS (Pork)/ PigPass database (refer to the PigPass website at www.pigpass.com.au for information and options for uploading the required information).
4. Validation tool (scientific method is currently being researched by the pork industry) – validate the pork supply chain integrity system for rapid resumption of trade in event of a food safety incident.
Pigs listed on the PigPass NVD are physically identified through the use of a slap brand (pig tattoo) defined and enforced by state and territory legislation.
Australian Pork Limited is coordinating the development of a range of ‘Fact sheets’ in consultation with industry and relevant Commonwealth and state government agencies to facilitate understanding and adoption of the NLIS (Pork)/ Pork Supply Chain Integrity System.
