National BJD Financial and Non-Financial Assistance Package
A new scheme has been announced that will help beef cattle producers whose herds are already known or found to be infected with Bovine Johne's Disease (BJD). The scheme, to be known as the National BJD Financial and Non-financial Assistance Package, commenced on 1 July 2004 and is an initiative of the Cattle Council of Australia.
Why is BJD financial and non-financial assistance being provided to owners of infected beef herds?
The Cattle Council recognises that BJD is a disease of significance to the beef cattle industry and supports the goals and objectives of the National BJD Strategic Plan. This plan was developed by Animal Health Australia for the cattle industry and is reviewed annually.
One of these goals is to "Minimise the social, economic and trade impact of BJD at herd, regional and national levels." This goal is to be addressed through a series of measures that will:

Provide financial assistance to affected producers;

Reduce BJD prevalence; and

Remove the stigma associated with BJD infection and reduce emotional stress.
