Drought Tip
For SheepMAP owners and approved vets using Elements 2 and 3 in the manual to determine what sheep movements you can manage during the drought while still maintaining MAP status, this link to the Assurance Based Credit (ABC) Scheme could be handy.
These forms are no longer included in the SheepMap Manual.
In some states, the Department of Primary Industries or Agriculture will issue the certificate directly and in others the State MAP Coordinator will advise the veterinarian of the number to record on the Certificate. In those states, copies of blank flock status certificates can be obtained from your state/territory Johne’s disease Coordinator.
Veterinarians should contact their state MAP coordinator to obtain advice/copies of the forms.
Please note
In 2005 Animal Health Committee endorsed IMPORTANT changes to the SheepMAP program that allow flocks to maintain their MN level by vaccination. Please read the following carefully.
Until now, SheepMAP flocks have been able to maintain an MN1 or MN2 status for a maximum of two years on the basis of a negative Maintenance Test, complying with the flock management plan and undergoing satisfactory annual veterinary audits. If a flock wished to retain its current MN1 or MN2 status, having already undertaken a Maintenance Test, it has had to complete a negative Sample Test every two years.
To maintain MN3 flock status, the maintenance testing must have been undertaken every three years.
These conditions still apply to flocks maintaining status by testing.
However, with the support of stud sheep breeder’s organisations, Animal Health Committee has now agreed to an alternative method of maintaining status. Flocks that have had either
may opt to maintain that MN level by undertaking vaccination of the whole flock initially, annual veterinary audits and annual vaccination of all lambs under 16 weeks of age.
All vaccinated sheep must be identified with an NLIS (Sheep) tag that contains the Property Identification Code or number and the letter “V”. The flock status will also include a V to indicate that it is vaccinating (eg MN2-V).
All SheepMAP flocks will continue to undertake an annual veterinary review by their approved veterinarian and comply with the other requirements of the program. The SheepMAP still requires investigation of suspect cases of Johne’s disease and/or of thin sheep at the annual veterinary review (Definition 4 and p29. Annual Veterinary Review, SheepMAP 2005).
As advised in a previous letter sent in April 2004, the Market Assurance Program will also continue to require producers to be audited externally, once every three years. At future audits, producers will be able to select the Quality Auditor of their choice from a list of approved auditors and arrange for the external audit to be held in conjunction with other industry quality audits such as those required by the LPA1 and LPA2 programs.
