APL Evidence of Absence Surveillance Project
Australia’s pork trading partners regularly enquire on the status of disease in the Australian pig herd. We have an established reputation of freedom from important pig diseases, but ongoing surveillance of the national pig herd is required to substantiate our declaration that the status of these diseases has not changed and to ensure that Australian import policy (conditions applied to imported products) is science based.
The Evidence of Absence Surveillance Project is an initiative of Australian Pork Limited that is being delivered by Animal Health Australia. The project seeks to increase the available evidence of absence of specified exotic diseases by general surveillance. Pig veterinarians have been consulted throughout the development of the project and have been provided with a guidelines booklet that outlines the clinical syndromes of interest and the recommended sample requirements for exclusion testing.
